A Pillowcase for the Kitchen...

I’m in awe of what some people will spend on kitchen “necessities” that serve simple purposes.

I’ve seen packages of flour sacks that aren’t sacks at all, and I’ve seen folks spend $5 to $10 to buy these items to keep flour and pizza boards free from dust.

Me? I use sanitized pillowcases. You can usually find discontinued designs quite cheap, and the color doesn’t much matter once they’ve been treated properly.  To sanitize I soak them in hot water then toss in the microwave on high for a full two minutes, then I wash them in hot water with bleach, then run them through one more washing cycle.

What else is the microwave good for? It’s been known for years that zapping sponges in the microwave has proven to kill just about any lingering bacteria these germ-breeders trap (and though I only use sponges for actual cleaning, I run them on high for a full minute nearly every day).

And on the fabrics note… I have about 18 bar mops, and I use several each day for cleaning up spills and drying down the sink. They get the same treatment - a zapping, and bleach. I also use these babies to protect my pans, which I need to stack due to lack of cabinet space (I hate hanging pots and pans on hooks).

Good bar mops are thirstier than regular kitchen dishtowels, and they’re easier to grab. They also cut down on paper towel waste. Just don’t use them for cleaning up greasy food spills unless you’re going to soak and sanitize them before running them through the dryer - your average washing machine can’t extract 100% of oils, thus tossing them in the dryer after a basic wash is just a fire waiting to happen.
