Spillover in the Oven?...
I once dumped an entire pizza, top side down, in the bottom of the oven. Table salt was the logical “buster” of smoke, smell and hefty cleanup.
I do keep table salt in the kitchen, and for good reason. First, some recipes (like pie crust) call for it. And, I can sometimes be a klutz. We all know that kitchen safety means you have a fire extinguisher nearby (I keep mine at arm’s length), as well as a container of baking soda (mine is right next to the stove with a quick release locking lid).
I also keep a canister of table salt in the front row of the spice cabinet. It’s used more for cleaning pots and snuffing out oven spillovers than cooking.
When your food spills over, cover it with table salt (yeah, I just dump it by the handful). This will cut down the smoke and burning smell. You can continue your baking/roasting then leave the oven to cool for several hours. Later, head in there with a spatula and you’ll be amazed how the salt has loosened up the spillage so you can scoop it right out.
I’m sure this is a published elsewhere trick, as it’s something I heard somewhere years ago and thankfully I remembered it when I needed the idea most.
