Hardware Store Bargain: Scrapers...

Why spend $9 on a board/food scraper if you don’t have to?

I commonly use a scraper to clean my pastry and flour boards, as well as scooping up freshly diced veggies and for scooping up the crumbs. Scrapers for the cook come in various materials and sizes, and prices commonly range from $5 to $9.

Since most home cooks only need scrapers for light work, I say save your money and stop at your local hardware store, where you can find a set of plastic ones for much less. Mine came in a set of three for just under $2.

They have a beveled edge that’s perfect for real scraping, and that’s not all I use these for. I’ll use the narrow one to frost cakes and cookies as well. I’ll use the large one to split bread doughs in half.

So save yourself a few bucks. However, I don’t recommend running these through the heat-drying cycle in the dishwaster. I was mine by hand.
