Buh-Bye Arby’s...

They may have tasty sandwiches and sides, but it’s so difficult to justify the price. Sans a coupon or gift card, I don’t see myself venturing through Arby’s again any time soon.

There are but three occasions whereas I’m willing to way overspend on something to eat:

  • In a high-class restaurant, where the atmosphere configures into the high-dollar meals.
  • When I’m cooking something special for myself or a dinner party.
  • When it’s my favorite Thai place.

Other than that, I have great trouble eating something that’s overpriced. It’s not that I’m stingy, but why would I pay outrageous prices on something that’s just too simple.

Take Arby’s, for instance. There’s no atmosphere, it’s self-serve for the most part, yet a few slices of overcooked roast beef on an onion roll is a whopping $3.39. Now, the way I make sandwiches it would probably cost me that much to prepare it at home. However, I’m not buying thousands of pounds of beef at wholesale discount, along with the rolls.

I gave their Loaded Potato Bites a try. They were tasty. But I paid $2.89 for five of these little tidbits. And they’re so simple, I just know I’m going to making up my own version (for a far better price).

In total, my husband and I ordered 3 Beef ‘N Cheddars, one of the Loaded Potato Bites, and a milkshake. Our bill? $16 and change. For that I could have hit the lunch special at my favorite Thai place and come home with leftovers. Especially since Arby’s sandwiches seem to get skimpier on the meat when they get heftier on the prices.

I don’t think I’ll ever hear another complaint when I buy Boar’s Head at $10 a pound…

    Dear Pamela,

I noticed you talking about beef, but might you have a recipe for raw chicken? After tasting some recently, I just can’t get that underdone, chewy-like-gristle sensation out of my mouth. Any rosy pink suggestions for chicken tar tar?

    Curious in Miami

    JM:

While raw chicken is considered an acceptable menu item in some cultures, there is actually a high rate of Salmonella contamination in raw poultry of any kind. If you’ve eaten raw chicken recently, I’d pay attention to any symptoms beyond the norm, as it could indicate food poisoning.

Commonly a bit or two wouldn’t likely cause serious contamination, so hopefully this was an accidental tasting of the bird’s raw meat.

Sorry, but the only recipe I have for raw chicken calls for spitting it out and dumping the rest of the plate in the trash.
