Only a Touch of Brownness Ringing New Year...

Last night brought just five of us into our living room. We had some no-shows, no-calls, and for a moment I was irritated about all the additional food and drink we’d just bought to accomodate a larger group. Fortunately the five of us - me, my husband, Joe, and Val, Eric and Liz - don’t need large crowds to have a great time. We wound up playing Trivial Pursuit and Imaginiff, turning on the TV at just four minutes before midnight to see the ball drop. Just about everyone in the neighborhood set off fireworks so Liz and I spent a bit outside with all the flashing lights and booms going on about us.The menu, originally grand, was scarce. In fact, we never got past all the appetizers - pita chips, tomato & mozzarell, sausage & cheese, cheese sticks, coconute shrimp, and pigs in a blanket. The fondue pot never get plugged in, and I now have four pounds of various cheeses and lots of veggies and meat lingering in the fridge. The intention of making garlic roasted broccoli was met with “I’m full…” Ahh, but the drinks flowed quite steadily.Despite the lack of attendance and the bloating refrigerator this morning, it really was an awesome New Year. Spending time with people you know and care about, laughing and just having a good time, far outweighs partying at a club where you’re packed like sardines wondering who’s going to fall over right in front of you. I couldn’t have asked to hang out with better people.

I leave you with a quick image of the last plate of pigs in a blanket, baked to a golden brown. Yeah, they look quite lonely and twisted, but they tasted awesome.
